Tragic loss in the FRC Community

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the tragic loss of a member of the FRC community. Evan Caldwell of Team 4627 and his brother Jordan passed away in an accident this past weekend.

Our thoughts and best wishes go out to the Caldwell family and Team 4627, as well as the other individuals injured in the accident. The untimely loss of such remarkable young men is inconceivable. We are saddened, but remain strong for you.

Volunteers Needed – FRC Western Canada Regional

The FIRST Robotics Competition is a high school robotics program designed to combine the excitement of sport with the rigours of STEM education. This year’s Regional Tournament in Calgary features not only local teams, but also teams from Mexico, the USA, and as far away as Israel and Australia. This year’s FIRST Stronghold challenge promises to be very exciting:

We’re looking for volunteers to fill various technical & non-technical roles including: referees, robot inspectors, safety advisers, game-field helpers, etc. Prior robotics experience is not necessary.

FRC 2016 Ambyint Practice Field

We have a special announcement to make for FRC teams in the Calgary area. This year, we have partnered with a fantastic sponsor Ambyint, to build and provide for FRC teams, a competition spec practice field.

Ambyint is providing us with an amazing space in their facility, and we will be building a FIRST Stronghold specification practice field for all FRC teams in the Calgary area to come and use to practice with. We’re already in the process of acquiring and building the game obstacle pieces.

Our plan is to have this space available to teams starting in the last week of January. Teams can use this space free of charge during our scheduled practice times. We’ll be posting plenty of information in the next week about the details of this space on our website under the “FRC Team Resources” page:

Ambyint Practice Space

“We are proud to announce the coming together of minds, a partnership between First Robotics Western Canada and Ambyint.

At Ambyint, we are firm believers in supporting the tech community and surrounding ourselves with creative minds.  We are thrilled to open our technology innovation centre to host the FRC 2016, FIRST Stronghold Challenge. While teams work and play in our space, we hope participants arrive curious and leave inspired.

FIRST STRONGHOLD KickOff & 3 Day Robot Builds

Today’s FRC 2016 FIRST STRONGHOLD KickOff & QuickBuild Event was a huge success. We had almost 20 teams comprised of over 150 students, mentors, parents, and coaches assembled at SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary to watch the KickOff livestream and participate in the QuickBuild.

Special thanks to all the SAIT staff and students who helped us put on this great event. Our photos of the event are now posted to our Facebook page, check them out here:

In other news, Robot in 3 Day builds have commenced. In Calgary there are two teams working on this, and it is a great resource for FRC students to learn from. You can find more info on these teams and their builds on our Robot in 3 Day page:
