FIRST & LEGO Education Partnership Update: Message to the Alberta Community

On March 18–19, 2026, FIRST and LEGO® Education announced that their long‑standing global partnership will not be renewed after the 2026–2027 season. You can read the official statements from FIRST and LEGO Education for full details.

For nearly three decades, this partnership has introduced millions of young people to hands‑on STEM learning, teamwork, creativity, and problem‑solving. While this marks a significant transition for the global FIRST LEGO League community, it does not change FIRST Alberta’s commitment to supporting students, educators, and volunteers across our province.

What This Means for Alberta

  • The 2026–2027 FIRST LEGO League season will proceed as planned, and FIRST Alberta is fully prepared to deliver a complete, high‑quality experience for teams across the province.
  • In Alberta, we will continue to operate using the Founder Edition, which has served our community successfully for many years.
  • LEGO Education has confirmed that it will continue supporting SPIKE™ Prime through the 2026–2027 season.
  • FIRST has confirmed that teams will be able to use their SPIKE™ Prime for at least the next three seasons.
  • FIRST has begun developing a new K–8 program to succeed FIRST LEGO League after the partnership concludes. Details will be released by FIRST HQ over the coming months.

Our Commitment to You

FIRST Alberta remains dedicated to:

  • Ensuring a stable and predictable 2026–2027 season for all Alberta teams.
  • Supporting coaches, mentors, and volunteers with clear guidance as updates become available.
  • Advocating for Alberta students to have continuous access to high‑quality STEM programs, regardless of global program changes.
  • Communicating openly and promptly as FIRST HQ releases information about the future K–8 program.

Looking Ahead

Change can bring uncertainty, but it also brings opportunity. FIRST is designing the next generation of K–8 STEM programs, and LEGO Education is preparing its own future competition offerings. Both organizations have expressed their commitment to supporting students, educators, and volunteers during this transition.

FIRST Alberta will continue to:

  • Promote and support all levels of FIRST programs in our province.
  • Provide updates to our community as soon as new information is confirmed.
  • Work closely with our partners, event hosts, and volunteers to ensure Alberta remains a strong and vibrant home for FIRST programs.

Thank you to our teams, coaches, mentors, volunteers, sponsors, and families for your continued dedication to inspiring young people across Alberta. Together, we will navigate this transition and continue building a future where every student can discover their potential through STEM.
